The nonprofit Wayland Community Sports Center (WCSC) seeks to support the Wayland community’s diverse recreational needs by leveraging private donations to build and operate a dynamic multi-purpose indoor sports and community facility at the site of the former Wayland DPW (195 Main St).
We propose building a state-of-the-art facility under a nonprofit structure that would reap multiple benefits for our Town.
After engaging stakeholders and reviewing nearby solutions, we recommend a public-private partnership to maximize community benefits without burdening taxpayers. This project will rehabilitate an environmentally challenged site, turning it into a valuable asset.
Our goals are to:
The Wayland Community Sports Complex (WCSC) is an exciting concept driven by a group of Wayland residents with professional expertise and a passion for youth sports. The group identified the need for a multi-purpose indoor recreational space at 195 Main Street by the Middle School.
By forming a Nonprofit, the Town retains control and creates a self-sustaining organization that provides low-cost facilities and eventually generates revenue for youth sports. Once profitable, 10% of the facility’s profits will be shared with Wayland each year. We seek no funding from the Town, only access to repurpose the vacant space.
This proposed project can address the needs of three (3) main constituencies:
The nonprofit Wayland Community Sports Center (WCSC) seeks to support the Wayland community’s diverse recreational needs by leveraging private donations to build and operate a dynamic indoor sports and community facility at the site of the former Wayland DPW (195 Main St).
In the Fall, Spring and Summer, the building will primarily be hard courts. That can be basketball, volleyball, or pickleball. During the winter months, we plan to convert the majority of the courts into turf fields. Those fields will support soccer, lacrosse or baseball. At all times, we will have a track open for folks to use to stay active.
We have not determined which specific sports will have priority or will be the focus for each season. A cornerstone of the plan is to hire a third-party expert to plan and organize programming, line up programming partners, and manage the day-to-day operations.
Another cornerstone of our efforts is recruiting and supporting anchor tenants who will pay premium fees to host their sports club in our facility. We’ve been approached by a number of interested parties who want to establish a Wayland base of operations. The vision is to have Club teams working in conjunction with youth sports to foster stronger relationships. Parents will have convenient local club options.
A key part of the WCSC plan is hiring a 3rd party expert to manage the programming schedule and recruit organizations that offer programming and/or want to rent the facility. In Winchester (a non-profit model we have observed) they partnered with Acton Teamworks to run the facility. We’ve met with the leadership of Acton Teamworks and Edge Sports Group who have all expressed an interest in a partnership.
Timeline to ribbon-cutting depends on many factors and hurdles. The first hurdle is getting an Article on the April’s Town Meeting agenda. If we get an Article, then we need to pass that Article by a two-thirds margin. If we secure the land, that’s when the real work starts. We will need to design the facility, manage traffic questions and address the environmental remediation efforts and get our arms around financing the effort.
We’ve got lots of ways to get involved:
In the short term, we’ve got lots of folks working together to organize and run Hoops for a Home Court 3v3 Charity event on Saturday, Dec 7th. If you want to help leading up to the event or on Dec 7th. We can use help!
Longer-term volunteer efforts—As we prepare for April’s Town Meeting, we have a group of 8-12 folks who have certain specialties working on building design, financing, setting up the non-profit, or simplifying networking with folks on different Town committees to explain our vision. We can use help here as well.
We will be launching a donation page on our website. It’s worth noting if this effort does not become an Article and the effort does not move forward, all fund raised will be donated to Wayland Youth Sports.
No, our goal is not to ask the town for any money to build and/or run the facility.
Yes. Initially, until WCSC gets approved as a 501(c), all donations will be made to Wayland Youth Basketball Association and then sent to WCSC. Once WCSC has been officially designated a non-profit, it will take over fundraising.
Thank you for signing up.
